PostHeaderIcon How I made a successful iPhone App

So in my last post I talked about why I made a crap iPhone app.  As I mentioned then it didn't go that well.  Certainly not as well as iBeer.  I don't mean to be promoting iBeer all the time it's just that IT'S JUST A FAKE BEER and people keep buying it.  The guy who made it is now a multi-millionaire.  I find it very frustrating.

So I thought OK rather than trying to get the million dollar jackpot why not just made a useful app that people would need.  I have a friend who's also a developer and his app "Food Additives" was doing quite well so I thought why not try the health market.

A low GI DietI have this standard deal with my friends and family that if any of them come up with an idea for an app and I decide to do I'll give them 5% of the profits.  Pretty sweet deal if you think about it.  I have to do all the design, all the coding and all the marketing.  All they come up with is the idea.  My mum came up with the idea of something to do with Low GI.  That's when I made A Low GI Diet - Glycemic Index Search.

It's a simple app which used a lot of the old code from Crossword Solver.  It's a list of foods and their GI score.  People can scroll through the foods or do a full or partial word search.  Over time I improved the app by translating it into French, Spanish German and Italian.  This really paid off!  In Italy I must been featured in an article or on the news, because the app made $350 Aussie dollars profit in one day.  I generally only sell about 20 per day worldwide but because it's a serious useful app I can charge a bit more for it.  I've found the most profitable price is $3.99 USD.

So after apple take their cut it averages about $50 a day profit (don't worry mum the checks in the mail... honest).  Not a bad little earner.  It's good to have a steady consistent earner in your portfolio.  So then I could go on to try high risk apps which I thought had more potential to be million dollar apps like Attack PRO or Augmented - Wanted Dead or Alive.  But more on those in my future posts.
